A county jail is under investigation after an inmate was seriously injured during an assault inside his housing unit.

According to officials familiar with the incident, the victim had reportedly accumulated gambling debts and was unable to repay several other inmates. Investigators believe the unpaid debt may have contributed to the confrontation.

Authorities say the inmate was attacked inside his cell by multiple individuals before correctional officers responded. Jail medical staff treated the victim for injuries that were described as serious but not life-threatening. He was later transferred to a different housing unit as a precaution.

The sheriff’s office has opened an investigation into the incident and is reviewing surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses, and examining whether staffing levels and security procedures were adequate at the time of the assault.

No arrests or additional charges have been announced as investigators continue to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.
